# Egg laying and lay box

A female produces a clutch of 2 eggs every 4 to 6 weeks during the breeding season. She needs a dedicated lay box, without one, she will lay in the substrate or hold the eggs, risking dystocia.

- Lay box: deli cup or Tupperware with a hole cut in the lid, filled with 3 to 4 inches of moist (not wet) coco fiber or sphagnum.
- Place in the enclosure at all times for breeding females, not just during lay periods.
- Collect eggs within 24 hours. Mark the top with a dot so orientation stays consistent, rotating a developing egg can kill the embryo.
- Expect a gravid female to lose 5 to 15 grams in a single lay. This is normal and why extra calcium/protein matters during the season.
