# Safe handling technique

- "Hand-walking": let the gecko walk from one palm to the other. Never grab, squeeze, or restrain.
- Keep sessions short, 5 to 15 minutes is plenty. Stop earlier if the gecko freezes, gapes, or sits and pants.
- Handle low over a soft surface (bed, couch) so a jump does not result in a fall from height.
- Never pick up by the tail. Crested gecko tails are autotomous and will drop at the lightest pull.
- Wash hands before and after. After insects or raw meat, always wash before reaching into the enclosure.

**Stress signals, put the gecko back**

- Mouth held open, slow deliberate panting, darkened colors that do not fade.
- Violent wriggling, leaping repeatedly, tail whipping side-to-side like a whip.
- Tail base lifted and waved slowly, a pre-drop warning, stop immediately.
