# Sexing a crested gecko

Crested geckos can usually be sexed at 15 to 25 grams of healthy weight, well before breeding size. Males develop a visible hemipenal bulge at the vent and preanal pores; females do neither.

- Males: obvious bulge beneath the vent when viewed from below, plus a row of preanal pores that become visible as dots or specks forward of the vent.
- Females: smooth vent area, no pore row, narrower tail base.
- Sexing below 10 g is unreliable and should not drive a purchase decision. Ask the breeder to re-check if you buy young.

- Hobby tip: photograph the vent with a phone macro lens and zoom in rather than trying to eyeball it while the animal is squirming.
