**Also called:** Axie, Axan
**Rarity:** Rare
**Inheritance:** Recessive
**Category:** Color modifier
**Typical adult price:** $1,500 to $4,000

**Definition.** An Axanthic crested gecko is a crested gecko with two copies of a recessive gene that removes yellow and red pigment, so it shows only black, gray and white.

Proven recessive trait that removes yellow and red pigment, animals appear black, gray, and white.

Visual axanthic crested geckos are typically gray, charcoal and pale-toned rather than strongly warm-colored. Several breeder lines exist; compatibility and carrier claims require documentation. Lighting, firing state and image processing can make a non-axanthic animal appear gray, so one photograph is not a genetic test.

**History.** Multiple axanthic breeding projects have been developed; confirm the specific line with the breeder.

**Key features:**
- A recessive trait documented in breeder lines
- Typically reduced warm coloration
- Carrier status cannot be established by appearance

**How to identify it:**
- Compare unfiltered photographs in neutral light
- Confirm lineage and compatibility before interpreting inheritance

**Lookalikes and how to tell them apart:**
- Lavender (https://geckinspect.com/MorphGuide/lavender): A cool-looking base color does not by itself demonstrate axanthic genetics.
- Albino (https://geckinspect.com/MorphGuide/albino): Albinism concerns melanin; axanthic animals retain dark pigment.

**Often combined with:** Lilly White, Soft Scale, White Wall, Dalmatian, Harlequin, Pinstripe, Cappuccino

**Current asking prices (Geck Inspect Price Index, 2026-10-06).** Asking prices on public crested gecko listings, converted to USD, not sale prices. Full dataset: https://geckinspect.com/data/price-index.json

| Market | Listings | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| United States | 144 | $600 | $800 | $1,200 |
| South Korea | 355 | $335 | $708 | $2,125 |
| Europe | 6 | $364 | $448 | $1,065 |

**Notes.** Recessive inheritance predictions apply when the parents carry the same compatible trait. A gray photograph is not proof of a visual axanthic or a carrier.
