Hatching and record keeping, crested gecko care
Pipping (breaking the eggshell) takes hours to a full day. Leave the hatchling in the egg until it fully emerges, pulling it out early interferes with yolk absorption.
Level: advanced. Part of: Breeding.
- Move the hatchling to its own 6-qt tub within 24 hours of emerging. Do not feed for 48 hours, it is still absorbing yolk.
- Log everything: hatch date, hatch weight, clutch number, parents, incubation temperature. Good records are the currency of serious breeding.
- Do not evaluate morph at hatch. Many traits (extreme harlequin, true pinstripe, etc.) do not express until the first major shed and some not until 3 to 6 months.
- Sell or trade only after the hatchling is 3+ grams, eating reliably, and has had a successful shed. Hobby ethics put this floor around 8 to 10 grams for most breeders.
