Highway Crested Gecko
A Highway crested gecko carries one copy of an incomplete-dominant trait associated with a continuous, clean dorsal stripe, provisionally placed on the same gene as Cappuccino and Sable.
One copy makes a visual Highway and two copies make a Super Highway. Highway is treated as the third version of the Cappuccino and Sable gene, mainly because Super Highway hatchlings show nostril and health issues like Super Cappuccino; the community has not fully settled this, so it is still badged Emerging. A gecko holds two versions of the gene at most, so it can be Cappuccino plus Highway or Sable plus Highway. A clean, unbroken back also comes from Empty Back, Phantom and line-bred patternless animals, so a photo alone does not prove Highway.
Avoid Highway x Highway: Super Highway hatchlings have reported nostril and health issues. Pair Highway to a normal, or to a Cappuccino or Sable for a compound with no super.
Inheritance: Incomplete dominant. Category: Pattern. Rarity: rare. Also called: Super Highway.
Key features
- Continuous, unbroken dorsal stripe
- Clean sides
- One copy is visible: no hidden het
How to tell it apart
- Cappuccino: Cappuccino and Highway are thought to be versions of the same gene; a clean-backed animal needs lineage to say which one it carries.
- Patternless: Line-bred patternless animals can show a clean back with no Highway gene at all.
- Phantom Pinstripe: A Phantom Pinstripe also reads as a quiet, unbroken back; Phantom is recessive and only lineage separates the two.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Highway crested gecko?
A Highway crested gecko carries one copy of an incomplete-dominant trait associated with a continuous, clean dorsal stripe, provisionally placed on the same gene as Cappuccino and Sable.
What does a Highway crested gecko look like?
A typical Highway crested gecko shows these features: continuous, unbroken dorsal stripe; clean sides; one copy is visible: no hidden het.
How do I identify a Highway crested gecko?
To identify a Highway crested gecko, check these points: look for an unbroken stripe from head to tail base; confirm with documented lineage, since several genes and line-bred looks give a clean back.
What is the difference between Highway and Cappuccino?
Cappuccino and Highway are thought to be versions of the same gene; a clean-backed animal needs lineage to say which one it carries.
How is Highway inherited?
Highway is classified as incomplete dominant. Single copy produces a visible form; two copies produce a distinct "super" form. The most common inheritance model in proven crested gecko morphs.
What other morphs combine with Highway?
Highway is often combined with Cappuccino, Sable, Lilly White and Axanthic.
